Seventeen drivers were arrested for DUI in Island County during the recent crackdown on impaired motorists, state officials said Wednesday.

Extra patrols by the Island County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol were conducted across the county as part of the “Drive Hammered, Get Nailed” campaign from Aug. 19 through Sept. 5.

Statewide, law enforcement officers arrested 1,824 drivers for DUI during the campaign.

The extra patrols were funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

Commission officials said the extra patrols are making an impact on impaired driving in the state in recent years. The commission reports that more than 40 percent of the DUI traffic deaths occur in Washington during the summer months, and according to preliminary 2010 data, the number of DUI traffic deaths has decreased by 16.5 percent compared to the previous five-year average.
