“South Whidbey finished third overall in the Bi-District girls golf tournament Thursday and one Falcon earned the right to participate in the state tournament.Senior Amy Brunner led her team with a 104 score at Bellingham Golf & Country Club and will play in the state tournament. While it wasn’t Brunner’s best round of the year, Falcon coach Tom Sage described it as not bad — the course played tough, the greens were incredibly fast. Any approach shot that hit the green was likely to roll right off, said Sage. The conditions inflated all scores with the winners, two players from Meridian, tying for medalist honors with 95. Meridian advanced all five of its team members to state while easily winning the bi-district tournament.A point system was used for scoring. Meridian won with 137, Mount Baker recorded 124, and South Whidbey was third with 87.5, followed by the rest of the pack.Freshman Adrienne Hawley was second for South Whidbey with a 107, her best score of the year. She would have earned a state berth except for a two-stroke penalty she was assessed after a mixup over winter and summer rules.Hawley will go to state as a second alternate, however. She won a three-way chip-off involving herself, teammate Danielle Dumke, and a Mount Baker player, all of whom finished at 107.The state AA tournament will be held next Monday and Tuesday at Semiahmoo.”
