A grand total of eight South Whidbey athletes captured first place during the school’s opening track meet Thursday, a jamboree attended by the best and brightest from four schools.

Threatening rain clouds parted and, though the wind was chilly and the grass soggy, the sun raised everyone’s spirits.

“The last couple of jamborees it was either rain or snow,” said principal Mike Johnson. “This is great.”

Boys and girls ran, jumped, hurdled and threw against competitors from Archbishop Murphy, Jackson and Lakewood.

And they had fun doing it.

For the Falcon girls: Lauren Sandri took first in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash (13.21 seconds and 27.6 respectively), Mary Bakeman was first in the 1600-meter run (5:46.30), Lindsey Mock took first in the high jump (4 feet-10 inches), Ashley Stonebridge won the pole vault (8-06) and Emma Ruggiero put the shot a far distance (27-08.50) for first.

For the Falcon boys: JD Peters ran the 800-meters to victory at 2:05.6, Jason Fitz was tops in the 110-meter hurdles (15.88) and Todd Berry won the shot put event (42-11).

Fitz shaved nearly a second off last year’s performance and beat last year’s league champion Nick Snyder.

“This is my race,” he said. “Cross country is excellent for training purposes, but for me it’s all about track.”

Bateman wasn’t expecting quite the high caliber of the competition.

“I was a little shocked to feel that other girl (Lakewood’s Sarah Dunn) sneaking up behind me,” Bateman noted. “But that’s good because she forced me to go even faster. It was a very good race.”

To say Coach Doug Fulton was pleased would be an understatement.

“Having five girls under 14 seconds in the 100-meter this early in the season is exceptional,” he said.

“Our freshmen girl milers ran terrific; all personal bests. JD had a good run in the 1600-meters; he and good friend Tyler Rapp have had many battles over the last four years; this time Tyler got him,” Fulton added.

“Overall, the kids are working really hard and all the coaches are extremely pleased by yesterdays performances,” he said.

On March 23 the team travels to King’s, then welcomes Lakewood to Waterman Field on March 30.
