“South Whidbey’s fastpitch team increased its winning streak to three consecutive games Saturday with a 2-0 non-league win at Lynnwood. After starting the year 0-2, the Falcons have now knocked off Granite Falls, Lynden Christian and Lynnwood, improving to 3-2 overall. Their losing streak of more than two seasons is now forgotten.Freshman talent has made the big difference for the Falcons this year and Saturday was no exception. Frosh pitcher Ashley Lopez enjoyed her finest moment as a Falcon, holding the Royals scoreless while walking only one and giving up a meager three hits over seven innings.South Whidbey did all the scoring it needed in the first inning thanks in part to a wild Royals pitcher. She walked in the first run in the form of Mary Murphy, and then Val Mock singled to drive in Lopez, who had also walked. The visitors didn’t score again, although Lopez later banged a triple that brought her teammates to their feet.Lynnwood’s biggest threat came in the seventh when two Royals reached base with one out. Then Lopez fanned a batter, and catcher Lauren Johnson snuffed the rally by cutting down a runner trying to steal third. Shortstop Marianna Norby handled the put-out at the bag.An important game at Nooksack Valley, also 2-0 in league, was rained out Monday, but the teams were hoping to get it in Tuesday. Friday the Falcons are scheduled to travel to Lakewood.”
