The victory also gave South Whidbey a 1-0 record in the North Cascades League, and improve their overall mark to 1-2.Coach Renee Christian said her players were extremely happy at the end of the game but not over-excited. It was just such a shock, she laughed. They weren’t ballistic — it was just ‘OK, this is over with now.’Christian added, These kids have waited a long time for this. They took pictures, but they knew it was going to come. The Falcons’ last fastpitch victory came late in the 1997 season when they beat Lynnwood 12-1 for their only win of that campaign. In 1998 and 1999 they played against Class AAA opponents and failed to win a game. The Falcons entered the 2000 season back in AA and with an infusion of freshman talent. Frosh pitcher Val Mock went to the rubber for her second start of the season against Granite Falls and turned in her second consecutive sparkling performance.Mock whiffed 10 Tigers while allowing only two hits and giving up four walks. Her good pitching kept the defense on its toes and for the first time in recent memory the Falcons didn’t make as single defensive miscue. Freshman Sarah Bottenberg sparkled in center field. One catch was unbelievable and another was almost a Griffey catch, said Christian. And, finally, the Falcon bats warmed up, something coach Christian knew was inevitable. These kids can hit, she said — and they proved it against Granite. The Falcons totaled 7 hits and worked the pitcher for a number of walks. Marianna Norby hit a home run and knocked in two runs, Jenny Murphy went 2-for-4 at the plate, Ashley Lopez drove in two runs, and Keasha Campbell doubled in her one official at bat.The win sent the Falcons into Thursday afternoon’s league game against Lynden Christian. With Mock pitching again, the Falcons earned an 8-0 victory in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.Mock wasn’t overpowering with six strikeouts, but the defense again was errorless. Shortstop Marianna Norby made two dazzling plays, fielding balls behind third base and making the long, accurate throws to first.Lynden Christian managed only two hits while South Whidbey collected seven, led by Mock who went 3-for-4 at the plate and Norby who was 2-for-4.The week’s action left the Falcons with a 2-0 North Cascades League record.Gee, we’re in first, said Christian, uttering words never before spoken by a Falcon fastpitch coach.Today the Falcons play a non-league game at Lynnwood. They then return to league actions with games Monday at Nooksack Valley and Wednesday at Lakewood.”
