“The Falcon fastpitch team faces a monumental battle for second place in the conference when they travel to Mount Baker on Tuesday.It’s do or die, said coach Renee Christian. Mount Baker is one game ahead of the Falcons in the North Cascades standings, and a win will even things up. Then the final standings would be determined by what happens the remainder of the busy last week of the regular season. The top two teams in the standings receive a bye in the first round of the playoffs.On Wednesday the Falcons play a make-up game at Sultan, and on Thursday they wrap it up with a long trip to Blaine. It’ll be a tough week on the road, Christian said.The regular season home schedule ended Thursday against Meridian. The game was moved up one day so Meridian players could attend a Friday funeral for a fellow student.The Falcons won 6-2 behind the five strikeout pitching of Ashley Lopez. South Whidbey took a 6 -0 lead before Meridian scored two in the fifth to avoid a shutout.Marianna Norby doubled and drove in two runs for the Falcons, while Lauren Johnson tripled. The win improved South Whidbey’s record to 9-4 in league and 11-6 overall, while Meridian fell to 5-6, 6-8.”
