Ferry fares on all routes will go up starting Oct. 1.

Vehicle and driver fares will increase 2.5 percent, passenger fares 1 percent. Combined, they are the first of two increases coming in the next 12 months. The next fare hike is planned for May 2016.

Both were set to help the ferry system meet its operating costs, and are expected to generate $357 million by June 30, 2017 as required in the 2015-17 state transportation budget, according to the Washington State Transportation Commission.

The single fare vehicle and driver peak season surcharge will end Oct. 1. Multi-ride passes are not affected by the peak season surcharge.

Regular fare for a walk-on or vehicle passenger will be $4.85 on the Clinton/Mukilteo route, while a standard vehicle and driver will pay $8.50.
