South Whidbey Fire District 3 is urging everyone to “ICE” their cell phones.

It’s a campaign to clearly mark persons in each cell-phone directory to be called in case of emergency, said Connie Shields, district emergency medical services director.

ICE stands for “In Case of Emergency.” Phone lists of people to call would read in the cell-phone directory like “ICE Dad” or “ICE Mom.”

The district is handing out red-and-white stickers about an inch wide to paste on cell phones to alert those responding to emergencies.

Shields said the global ICE campaign started in Great Britain in 2005 after a terrorist bombing attack.

“We’re spreading the word locally in hopes it gains popularity here,” she said.

“ICE could reunite loved ones, ease anxiety during a stressful event or even help to save a life.”

Shields said phone-list names flagged with ICE should be people who know your medical history, and that they should be notified that they have been so designated.

ICE names should also be people who are aware of your medications, allergies and doctors, she added.

To get the free ICE stickers, contact a district volunteer or visit district headquarters between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 5535 Cameron Road in Freeland.
