Fire scorches shed in Freeland

By the time firefighters arrived, the resident had mostly extinguished the blaze.

An unattended wood stove caused some damage to the contents of a backyard shed that caught on fire late Sunday night, according to South Whidbey Fire/EMS.

The call came in at 11:49 p.m. for the Timber Lane structure fire. By the time firefighters arrived, the resident had mostly extinguished the blaze.

“He actually used a pressure washer because his hose wouldn’t reach,” Division Chief of Training Alex Magallon said.

The back wall and ceiling of the sturdy, 100-square-foot wooden shed will need replacing, but the structure wasn’t a total loss. The items inside, however, were damaged. No injuries were reported.

Magallon said South Whidbey Fire/EMS was on scene for about 45 minutes to mop up some hot spots. Less than 500 gallons of water was used. Thankfully, the fire did not spread to any nearby structures, such as the main home on the property.

The cause was determined to be linked to a wood stove that was running unattended. The fire started from the chimney pipe.

Magallon estimated the structure, which appeared to be a workshop with family heirlooms, to be about 20 years old. Some of it was made with reclaimed wood.
