“A woman who lost everything in a fire near Freeland July 12 wants her friends to know she’s OK.Janice Brunelle left immediately after the fire to stay temporarily with her daughter, Charity Spaulding, in Rainer, Ore. She had nowhere to go after the fire gutted the whole place, Spaulding said Monday. She lost absolutely everything — furniture and clothes.Brunelle said the fire in her rented mobile home was caused by an electrical wiring problem. Although she escaped without injury, four of her five cats succumbed to the noxious smoke. She also had a parakeet which escaped. Brunelle said she kept the bird’s cage open in case of just such an emergency. He beat me out of the house, she said. She described the bird as of the Quaker variety of parakeet. It may still be in the Beachwood Drive area.Brunelle, 47, had lived on Whidbey Island for eight years. She worked as a landscaper before becoming disabled due to a spinal condition. She said she plans to return to the island later this month. She may be reached by calling her daughter’s house at 503-556-0449.”
