The first year of sewer rate increases for Langley citizens was approved for implementation at Tuesday night’s Langley City Council meeting.

The go-ahead from the council followed months of discussion and meetings, including a public hearing that drew little resistance on June 6 at City Hall.

Rates will increase the average bimonthly bill of a resident from $100 to $121 this year. The increase is part of a six-year rate structure plan that will include additional increases annually until 2021 when average bills will top out at $256. By year, rates will increase by the following: 24 percent this September, 12 percent in 2017, 23 percent in 2018, 13 percent in 2019, 14 percent in 2020 and 15 percent in 2021.

The hikes will address the city’s aging infrastructure and facilities that have caused issues for Langley’s sewer system. Nearly $2 million is projected to be spent on repairs and improvements over the next 20 years.
