Former Langley mayor’s memory to be renewed with plaque at city hall

A former Langley mayor, who died while in office, will once again be remembered by city hall.

Mayor Vincent F. Jones died in office in 1965, current Mayor Fred McCarthy said at the Dec. 21 council meeting. A plaque was erected on a private property in town, but has since been removed. In an attempt to again honor Jones, McCarthy had a new one made by a company in Oak Harbor.

Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson was present at the meeting to receive the plaque because Jones was her grandfather. She said Jones worked diligently during his term to revitalize Langley’s downtown business core, similar to what has happened with the Langley Main Street Association and McCarthy for the past few years.

“Thank you, Fred,” Price Johnson said. “It means the world to me and my family.”

McCarthy gave the plaque to Price Johnson for the holidays, with the caveat that it be returned soon after to city hall, where it will be hung and displayed.
