A pickup hauling a Coachman trailer slammed into a Saturn.Jim Larsen/staff photoPlans are under way to place a stoplight at the intersection of Fish Road and Highway 525, but those plans did nothing to stop a fatal traffic accident from occurring Friday morning.At about 10 a.m., a 1996 Saturn carrying an elderly Clinton couple was trying to cross the highway. The driver pulled out into the path of an oncoming pickup truck pulling a heavy trailer.The driver of the truck, Coupeville resident Tom Kohr, 66, tried to avoid the car, but witnesses say he didn’t have a chance. The truck hit the Saturn on its front left side near the driver’s door and demolished it. Jim Wescott witnessed the wreck occurring as he was waiting in his car on the Fish Road side of the intersection. The guy pulled right in front of the truck, he said. I don’t think he even saw him coming. It wasn’t pretty.Much of the intersection was blocked by the Ford Lariat pickup and its Coachman trailer, which was approximately 30 feet long. The driver of the truck appeared uninjured and walked around the scene, describing to authorities what happened.The Saturn’s two airbags deployed but the occupants suffered serious injuries. The Jaws of Life were used to remove them from the car, and then they were transported by Whidbey Ambulance to Whidbey General Hospital.The State Patrol on Friday afternoon would not reveal the name of the deceased man until relatives are notified. The surviving woman is Helen H. Stewart, 93, of Clinton, who sustained neck and internal injuries. She was transferred from Whidbey General to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Friday.”
