A Freeland man was killed in a one-car crash in Everett Saturday.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s office identified the 28-year-old man Monday afternoon as Mitchell S. Casey.

According to Everett Police Department officials, the crash occurred at about 3 p.m. on the 4300 block of Broadway Avenue where a bridge takes the road over an I-5 on-ramp.

Emergency responders arrived to find Casey injured but alive. He was taken to a hospital where he later died of his injuries.

A Saturday news release from Everett police reported Casey as 29 and a Freeland resident. At the time, his identify had not yet been released.

Officer Aaron Snell, a spokesman for the department, confirmed Tuesday that Casey’s driver’s license was issued in May and listed a Freeland address. However, it’s unclear whether he was residing on Whidbey Island at the time of his death.

According to Casey’s Facebook page, he lived in Mukilteo and had attended Mariner High School. The webpage was overflowing with heartfelt messages and prayers from family and friends who are mourning his loss.

An investigation of the accident by the police department’s traffic safety unit determined that Casey, driving a 2004 Nissan pickup truck, failed to negotiate the tight “S” turn and collided with the bridge.

Snell said the investigation is ongoing, but there is no evidence at this time that drugs or alcohol were involved. Police are uncertain what exactly caused the crash to occur, he said.

“There really is no explanation or evidence at this time to support anything,” Snell said.

Although the medical examiner’s office has identified Casey, the cause and manner of his death are pending further investigation.
