Island County will host a public discussion about Freeland’s streets — current and future.

The program will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church’s Grigware Hall, and is sponsored by the county’s planning, public works and health departments.

Speakers will concentrate on the popular philosophy of “complete streets,” the move to make roadways that are designed with all users in mind, including bicyclists, public transportation and pedestrians of all ages and abilities, said county senior planner Anthony Boscolo.

Helen Price Johnson, Island County commissioner for the South End, said the presentation will help Freeland residents understand how complete streets can make their community more livable, walkable and sustainable.

“We have a ripe opportunity to foster complete streets in Freeland with the upcoming adoption of the Freeland Sub Area Plan,” she said. “We are asking our planners and engineers to develop road networks that support healthier, safer neighborhoods which are more inviting for everyone.”
