Freeland trailer fire cause still unknown

The cause of a fire that destroyed a 20-foot trailer in Freeland last week remains a mystery.

The cause of a fire that destroyed a 20-foot trailer in Freeland last week remains a mystery.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS Chief Rusty Palmer said department investigators have not discovered what ignited the trailer off Honeymoon Bay Road the morning of Jan. 24. A heat source or electrical problem is suspected, said Palmer, as neither he nor the other firefighters found anything to indicate arson.

“The fire took most of the evidence away,” he said.

Deputy Chief Mike Cotton, the incident commander at the scene, left his business card at the nearby home, but found it had not been touched Monday. He later learned the homeowners are in Alaska on a fishing boat. Palmer said he did not know if they know a fire has occurred.
