Games are for more than just kids

The owner of the new Game Shack in Bayview has found that just about everyone likes a good game. “I get to see a lot of different types of people,” said Dan Winn, owner of the Game Shack. “I think my youngest person in here that’s actually bought his own game was about 4,” Winn said. “And I would say I’ve had a number of people that I would guess are about 60 or 70 years old.”

The new business owner said he’s been surprised to see some of the older folks come in and ask for the leading edge computer and video games that have just come out, the kind that hardcore gamers would play.

Winn sells all kinds of games for all kinds of people. He’s gone game crazy.

Winn sells all the major video game consoles and accessories, like PlayStation 2, Xbox and Nintendo products. He sells computer games. He also sells comics, collectable card games and board games.

And because the business is only three weeks old, merchandise is still coming in.

“It’s hard to start a business over Christmas because a lot of the distributors are out of stock,” Winn said. “I’m going to expand the comic sections. The whole back is going to be new comics.”

Among these comics will be anime and Japanese graphic novels called Manga.

“You read them backwards,” Winn said. “They’re basically straight from Japan. They just have English instead of the Japanese characters.”

The game store owner also sells “Magic: the Gathering” game cards, as well as a newer collectable card game that is also a cartoon called Yu-Gi-Oh. These games have been a hit with customers so far.

“I didn’t stock those at first. But I had so many people ask for them the first two weeks that I added them,” Winn said.

Winn said there is also a lot more interest in computer games and in board games than he first realized.

He didn’t originally intend to sell board games, but had a extra space in the shop and decided to test them out.

“And those sold really well,” he said. “So I expanded that section.”

Having fun is nothing new to Winn; games have been a big part of his life for a long time.

“It’s something I’ve been involved with since I was very small,” he said.

And growing up, Winn and his friends would dream about how they all wanted to open a comic book and video game store.

“And I finally did — 20 years later,” he said.

Winn’s favorite part of the job is meeting his customers.

“It’s nice to talk to people who share the same hobby,” he said.

“I get to do that every day now.”
