A harvest celebration and work party at the community garden in Langley is planned for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.

The garden is near the Langley Middle School track behind the bus barn, and its bounty goes to the Whidbey Island Food Bank operated by Good Cheer.

The project, on land set aside by the South Whidbey School District, is a demonstration program for students and the community showing how sustainable gardening works. Set up with more than $10,000 in grants, the garden, in its first year, has already harvested more than 230 pounds of produce for the food bank, Kimmer Morris, project manager, said Monday.

“It’s a great project,” she said, “and it’s all locally funded.”

She said Saturday’s work party will be to put up a rabbit-proof fence and to stain the 40-foot greenhouse.

Morris said the garden already has produced tomatoes, beans, lettuce, cucumbers, cabbage, carrots, turnips, beets and squash, and contains an over-winter crop of kale, chard, celery and broccoli.
