“Two strong outings last week gave the South Whidbey girls golf team one final tune up and a good ego boost before they headed into playoffs this week.The Falcons placed second in North Cascade Conference meets on Tuesday and on Thursday, cementing a second-place NCC finish behind Meridian.On Tuesday, the Falcons proved that they will be in the hunt for a bi-district title, placing second to Meridian with a score of 460. Meridian totaled 454, while Mount Baker was back at 482. Blaine brought up the rear with a 583.Jennifer Pan, who has played between varsity and junior varsity teams this season, was the best South Whidbey player on the course. Her 89 was 10 strokes off the 79 medalist Beth Stockton shot for Meridian. Trailing Pan were Hailie Mansfield and Taryn Langlois (92), Adriene Hawley (93), and Maria Zontine (95).Pan led the way again Thursday when the Falcons traveled to the Semi-ah-moo resort in Blaine. On the course, the Falcons scored a team total of 516 to Meridian’s 513 and Mount Baker’s 500. South Whidbey’s score eclipsed those turned in by Blaine (619) and Lakewood (745). Pan’s round of 85 was tops for South Whidbey, and was just 10 strokes behind medalist Beth Stockton. Also shooting for the Falcons were Langlois (99), Mansfield (105), Hawley (108) and Zontine (109).The Falcon linkers started their playoff run Monday and Tuesday at the bi-district tournament at Gold Mountain. Prior to the meet, team coach Tom Sage said he thought several of his golfers could make the estimated 105-stroke state tournament cut, if they have a couple of good days of shooting.Well, we hope so, he said.The team finished bi-district play too late to be reported in this edition of The Record.
