“South Whidbey’s girl golfers teamed up to beat two conference opponents in a three-way varsity match at Useless Bay on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.The top five Falcon scorers combined for 574 strokes over 18 holes, easily eclipsing the efforts by Mount Baker with 630 and Nooksack Valley with 645.The win improved South Whidbey’s record in the North Cascades League to two wins and one loss.Coach Tom Sage said the lengthy match Tuesday was at times grueling, especially for his younger players. We’re a pretty young team, he said. The JV’s are quite strong.Seniors Danielle Dumke and and Amy Brunner showed their younger teammates how it’s done by carding respective scores of 90 and 94. After that the scores soared a bit. Junior Emily Willson shot a 120 while sophomores Anna McKinley and Maria Zontine scored 134 and 136, respectively.Wednesday the girls traveled to Oak Harbor for a non-league test using the Stableford modified scoring system. Oak Harbor won with 126 followed by South Whidbey with 81 and Mount Vernon, 56. Brunner scored 24, Dumke 22, Willson 12, Calandra Keck 12, and McKinley 11.Next Monday is a big day for South Whidbey golf as the girls host seven teams for the South Whidbey Invitational at Holmes Harbor. Boy Falcons tops at Raspberry RidgeSouth Whidbey’s boy golfers won a nine-hole match at Raspberry Ridge near Bellingham Monday, finishing in 212 combined strokes to 252 for Nooksack Valley. Mount Baker failed to field an entire team.Falcon senior Charlie Bass was medalist as he finished the par-34 nine in 37 strokes. He’s getting his confidence, said coach Mick Heggenes.The promising Alex Osenbach, a junior, stayed with Bass through six holes but then his final score ballooned to 40. He started thinking about it, Heggenes said. Don’t start counting strokes halfway through the round.Rounding out the team scoring with 45 strokes each were Chuck Applebee, Andrew Heintz and Bryce Hansen.
