Guest band at Saturday contra dance

“The South Whidbey Contra Dance is being held on a Saturday evening for the first time, with a new live band playing the music for the lively jigs, reels and hornpipes on the dance program.The event, sponsored by South Whidbey Parks and Recreation, will take place Jan. 29 at Bayview Hall. A beginner’s workshop is set for 7 p.m. Carol Piening of Olympia will call the dances, with live music by Fromage a’ Trois (Margie Katz on piano, Eric Schlorff playing bass and harmonica, and Ward Beebe (of Oak Harbor) playing fiddle.The band has been playing since 1992, for dances in Seattle, Eugene, Tacoma and other venues, as well as at the Northwest Folklife Festive and the Festival of American Fiddletunes. Their music emphasizes the danceability of the traditional American social dance that has roots in France and the British Isles. Dancing is at 7:45 p.m. Adults pay $6; ages 5-12 are $3.
