“A reserve deputy fired a gunshot as the vehicle of a fleeing crime suspect sped away in an incident on South Whidbey Tuesday evening.Sheriff Mike Hawley said the unpaid reserve was placed on administrative leave while the shooting incident is investigated. “At this point we don’t know if it was accidental or on purpose,” he Thursday. The bullet didn’t hit anything. Hawley declined to provide the name of the reserve deputy, who he said has been with the department about a year and had completed academy training.The incident began with a domestic violence call to 911 at 5:20 p.m. A father and son were reportedly in an altercation. After a physical confrontation the son, allegedly intoxicated, left in his father’s pickup truck.Deputy Rob Davison responded with the reserve deputy in his car. They spotted the suspect’s pickup near the corner of Maxwelton and Ewing roads. They followed the vehicle and after witnessing erratic driving pulled it over near the intersection of Ewing and Sills roads.Fearing the suspect may be armed, the two officers pulled their guns and approached the pickup. The suspect then shouted, “You’re going to have to (obscenity) kill me,” and sped off. At that point the reserve deputy’s gun discharged.With Deputy Davison in pursuit, the suspect drove toward Bayview and passed a car driven by Timothy Steitler, forcing the car off the road. Davison stopped his pursuit of the suspect to render aid to Steitler. A passenger in the vehicle, Stephanie Grimm, complained of back pain.The next morning the suspect was arrested at his parents’ home and booked into Island County Jail. According to Sheriff Hawley, Caleb Sousa, 19, of Langley, is being held on charges of assault 4 (domestic violence), malicious mischief 3 (domestic violence), felony hit and run, felony eluding a police officer, and driving under the influence. Bail was set at $25,000.”
