The South Whidbey School Board appointed junior Elshadai Hailu as the new student representative for the upcoming 2015-16 school year.

The board interviewed Hailu, the sole applicant for the position, on Wednesday evening. Following the interview, board Chairwoman Linda Racicot called to order a business meeting in which the directors unanimously voted to appoint Hailu.

“I think we have an obviously qualified candidate,” Racicot said.

Hailu is currently involved in the school’s Key Club and Knowledge Bowl team.

Hailu is invited to attend school board meetings during the summer but will begin her official term at the beginning of the school year.
