Vanessa really gets into spaghetti. The Fellowship Hall at Langley Methodist Church will once again fill with the aroma of fine Italian cuisine as Hearts and Hammers hosts its annual Spaghetti Dinner, Friday, Feb. 11, from 5-7:30 p.m. The event traditionally kicks off the volunteer drive and fund-raising effort for this community based group that provides free repair and maintenance on the homes of people who are unable to do so themselves. It’s also an opportunity to socialize with friends and neighbors just emerging from hibernation. This year’s dinner, under the direction of chief chef Sandy Menasche, will include spaghetti with a choice of meat or vegetarian sauce, salad, garlic bread, dessert tray and beverage. All this for $5 per adult, $3 for children under 12, or $15 for a nuclear family.Volunteers will be able to sign up to volunteer for the May 6 workday, and peruse the Y2K Hearts and Hammers T-shirts, hats, and workday gear that will be available. If you can’t make the dinner, volunteer sign up sheets will subsequently be available at Post Offices and local building suppliers. The organization has already identified more than 30 possible home sites for this year, and the fund-raising need has been estimated at $20,000 to do the work. Last year over 350 volunteers spread out over 300 square miles of South Whidbey to work on homes during the one-day event. Anyone interested in assisting with the dinner should contact Sandy at 579-4950. Kitchen help, servers and a clean up crew are needed, as well as folks to help prepare sauces beforehand.”
