The application deadline is Jan. 31.

Hearts & Hammers is a volunteer organization that since 1994 has repaired hundreds of homes across the South End for homeowners who can’t do the work for physical or financial reasons. Its mission is “neighbors helping neighbors stay in their homes.”

Last year, over 32 homes received assistance with volunteers accomplishing tasks from carpentry, floor and deck repair to window replacement, landscaping and trash removal. Priority is given to health and safety concerns.

Repairs are free because all the work is done by volunteers. Labor and materials are all donated. The largest annual workdays saw over 400 volunteers turn out to help.

“As we enter our 23rd year, it is good to see that so many volunteers, with help from community resources, keep home owners safe and healthy in their homes,” said Ross Godwin, president of Hearts & Hammers.

It is not just the homeowners who appreciate the help, according to Godwin. Volunteers also gain a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction by giving back to the community, he said.

This year’s workday is May 7.

It will be preceded by a volunteer kick-off spaghetti dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12 at the Langley United Methodist Church. It’s a chance for volunteers to sign-up for the work day and connect with old and new friends. Dinner is $5.

Financial donations can be made through the organization’s website or mailed to P.O. Box 694, Langley, WA 98260.
