Hearts & Hammers, a local non-profit organization, is once again reaching out to the South Whidbey community in search of homeowners who need the Hearts & Hammers touch on the May 5 workday.
Each year, Hearts & Hammers holds a one-day work blitz on the first weekend in May to provide free repair and maintenance for the homes of people who are physically or financially unable to do the work alone. The driving interest is to help people stay in their homes, and Hearts & Hammers gives priority to home-improvement projects that solve health and safety issues.
Last year, more than 400 volunteers worked at 39 spots on Whidbey, repairing homes for the disabled, the elderly and homeowners with limited resources. Crews also worked at various sites chopping wood, recycling and providing support services.
Volunteers from the highly skilled to the unskilled fixed roofs, floors, bathrooms, kitchens, cleaned yards, cleared trees, repaired plumbing, built ramps, and generally had a fun and fulfilling day providing practical help and community support for their neighbors.
Labor and materials are free to the homeowners. The annual effort is made possible through generous donations from individuals, local businesses, community and service organizations.
