The 10th annual Whidbey Island Highland Games will be Saturday, Aug. 9 at Greenbank Farm, sponsored by the Whidbey Island Celtic Society.

Highlights of the traditional Scottish event will be competitions in bagpiping, drumming, dancing and authentic athletic events such as the tossing of the caber — a long, heavy pole — and putting the heavy stone.

Events and competitions for children will also be held throughout the afternoon.

The games are regular features in Scotland and elsewhere to celebrate Scottish and Celtic culture and heritage, especially that of the Scottish Highlands.

At Greenbank, there will be displays of traditional Scottish clothing, literature and music. Visit the clan tents and trace your ancestry, as well.

Entertainment includes Maggie’s Fury from Bellingham; Ockhum’s Razor, one of last year’s favorites; Scottish and Irish dancing performances; and the string ensemble Celtic Chaos. The flyball-playing dogs of the Cascade Comets will put on demonstrations.

A variety of food, including traditional Scottish cuisine, will be available and there will be a beer garden featuring Boundary Bay Ale.

Gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Admission costs $8 for adults and $6 for children five through 12. Children ages four and younger are free. Seniors and military personnel are $6. No pets are allowed. Free Island Transit buses will stop at the games throughout the day.
