Highway striping that had been scheduled for this week in Clinton has been delayed until Aug. 11-13, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Workers postponed the work so they could spray lane markings and install plastic lane markings at the same time.

State officials said doing the work in one week will reduce delays for drivers.

Crews will work from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Monday, Aug. 11, through Wednesday, Aug. 13.

Kids sought for fair ‘food’ parade

Children are invited to show their support for Good Cheer Food Bank by dressing up as nutritious food items and marching with the Good Cheer group in the Island County Fair Parade on Saturday, Aug. 16.

Every costumed child will receive a free admission pass to the fair that day from Good Cheer staff, plus a $10 gift certificate for merchandise at Good Cheer Thrift Stores.

“This is an opportunity for kids to be creative and have fun making costumes to show off their favorite foods, while increasing awareness of hunger issues in our community and the world,” said Kathy McLaughlin, executive director of Good Cheer.

Entry forms are available at Good Cheer thrift stores in Langley and Clinton. Children and parents should meet in front of Good Cheer in Langley at

9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. Parents are asked to accompany their children in the parade. Details are available on Good Cheer’s Web site, www.goodcheer.org.

Fairgoers can get half-price admission to the fair from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 if they bring two canned goods to place in the receptacles at the entrances.

Kids Critter Workshop today

The Deer Lagoon Grange is sponsoring the second Kids Critter Workshop at the Tilth Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to

2 p.m. today.

The market is on Thompson Road just off Highway 525 near Bayview.

Although the event is for everyone young at heart, those 16 or younger will get a “Grange buk” when they come to the Saturday market. Youngsters can use the dollar to purchase produce from market vendors.

The Tilth vendors have special produce today, meaning the veggies may be odd-shaped and thus of special interest for making critters.

“Take the produce that you want to make your critter from to one of the tables on the grounds of the market and a Deer Lagoon Granger or a Tilth farmer will help you create a special critter for you to take home or enter in the Island County Fair,” said organizer Chuck Prochaska.

Land trust hosts housing meeting

Looking for an affordable place to live? A free home-ownership orientation scheduled by Saratoga Community Housing may help.

Saratoga Community Housing is a nonprofit community land trust working to provide home ownership opportunities for people of low and moderate incomes who are being squeezed out of the housing market.

The meeting is 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Freeland Library.

Attending an orientation is the first step to becoming a Saratoga Community Housing homeowner, and is mandatory before submitting an application and being placed on the waiting list.

The meeting will explain about the nonprofit and community land trusts. It will also cover the steps involved in qualifying for the program and projects under way. Applications will be available.
