A combination of Fire/EMS responders from Camano, South and Central Whidbey responded to two kayakers in distress on Saturday evening after fast winds in Holmes Harbor created larger than normal waves.

The distress calls were received around 7:45 p.m. Saturday evening. The kayakers were OK, and landed on the beach near Brainers Road in Langley. They never fell out of their kayaks.

Fast winds whipped the two female kayakers, from Greenbank, across Holmes Harbor and they were not able to control the kayaks. South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Jason Laughren said the GPS coordinates responders were receiving didn’t match up with where the kayakers were in Holmes Harbor. The distress call came from the area near Dines Point in Greenbank.

Laughren said there were no injuries in the incident, but one kayaker had “a little hypothermia.” He said they probably faced some waves they weren’t expecting. He expects the waves broke on their kayaks, leading to the hypothermia.
