Island County auditor admits mistake on voter’s guide

Island County Auditor Sheilah Crider said today her office was wrong when it said three candidates for county commissioner had missed a crucial deadline for being included in the local voter’s guide.

Only two candidates — Democrat Helen Price Johnson and Republican Reece Rose — missed the deadline.

Crider said candidate Curt Gordon had indeed submitted a statement in time to be included in the publication.

A missed e-mail was to blame, she said.

“It was our our mistake and I take full responsibility,” Crider said.

“I’ve offered my apology to Mr. Gordon and his campaign,” she added.

With four candidates in the race for the District 1 commissioner’s race this year, and only two candidates advancing to the general election in November, many see the county’s election guide as a vital must-do for candidates. The guide will be sent to every household in Island County before the primary election.

Gordon and incumbent Republican Phil Bakke were the only candidates in the race to meet last Friday’s deadline.

Crider said all of the statements, even those submitted after the deadline for the printed guide, will be put on the county’s election Web page.
