“The adults enjoyed the warm sun, the fluffy clouds in the sky and the eagle that soared overhead, but the kids were thinking only one thing: Fish. There were fish aplenty for the 140 kids who showed up Saturday for the annual Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club Kids Fishing Derby at Lake Albert off Newman Road. The fish were biting particularly well early in the morning, and some approached the lunker category. People lined the shores of little Lake Albert. Some parents cast bait into the water and then handed the pole to their child, while other kids were ready to handle the entire task themselves.Jeffry Buler, age 2, caught three in a hurry and lugged them around the lakside asking anyone who would listen, ‘Wanna see my fish? His parents, Wendy and Jeff Buler, kept a close eye on him. One of the fish Jeffry caught was a big one with a prize tag, and netted him a fishing hat which he wore proudly as well as a Les Schwab water bottle. He reeled ’em in so fast it was amazing the fish didn’t fall off, said Wendy Buler. Jeffry was hardly a novice fisherman, however. On opening day he helped catch eight at Deer Lake. After showing his latest rainbows around, Jeffry returned to his dad so they could catch some more.Fishing a little higher up from some rocks was Langley resident Pam Kirby, who brought her daughter Kaitlin and new neighbor Katie Knowlton to do some fishing. Pam was sure they’d catch some fish — once she got the backlash untangled from Kaitlin’s reel.A bicycle went to the boy and girl with the biggest fish. Among the 90 boys, Anthony Bratz was tops with a 21-ouncer, while Amanda Berry’s 16-ounce trout won in the girls division, which included 50 entries. The biggest bass was a 12 1/2-ouncer landed by Dustin Barnes. Katy Leese was the top girl bass angler with a 6-ounce fish.Other bikes were won in a drawing, with one going to Berry, giving her two for a day. She said she would raffle off the second bike and donate the proceeds to cancer research. Other girl bike winners were Casey Stepenski, Ahsen Chapman and Vica Radisch.Other boys winning bikes were Jacob Thomas, Chandler Carisen, Michael Rodriguez and Bradley Groce. All the kids were winners, however. Not only did they get in some fishing, but each received a Fishing Derby 2000 commemorative envelope containing a new Sacajawea dollar coin. The day was made possible by the Rod & Gun Club and featured many prizes donated by area merchants. The fish were provided by the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife.”
