The Langley Community Forum, a spirited online platform for the discussion of city issues, is no more. The Web site was closed down Sunday.

“We decided that the site had lived a useful life, and that the time had come to clear the space for others,” organizer Robert Gilman said.

The site, www.langleycommunityforum.org, was founded more than six years ago by Gilman, his wife Lianna, Bob Waterman and Gail Fleming as a way to encourage community involvement in the city’s future.

Much of the early discussion generated by the forum centered on the city’s update of its comprehensive plan. Robert Gilman and Waterman later became city council members.

The site curtailed public discussion this past January, when the Gilmans, who acted as hosts and moderators to increasing contentious debates, decided it was taking too much of their time.

The site continued to post coming events, workshops, books and resources and public meeting notices until Sunday.

The forum had more than 700 members and more than 9,000 posts since 2004, Gilman said. He said the member list would remain private, and that names would be removed on request.
