Langley is joining other courts of law across Whidbey and Washington to cut fines and fees owed by citizens.

People who have outstanding traffic tickets and fines can get reductions in late fees and other help if they act before the end of May.

Officials said the approach will help people get back their driving licenses while reducing the debt owed to courts and their collection agencies for unpaid fines and fees.

Island County District Courts and the Municipal Courts of Oak Harbor, Coupeville and Langley are participating in the program, which will run through the end of May.

All told, more than 100 courts throughout the state are participating in similar debt-reduction programs.

“The primary objective of this program is to make it easier for persons to obtain a valid license as well as allow persons to take care of non traffic matters with the court,” said District Court Judge Peter Strow.

District and municipal courts in Island County will be waiving the $52 late-fee penalty on matters that have not yet been forwarded to collections, offering the original reduction for pre-collections, past-due accounts infractions and working with collection agencies to waive interest and a significant portion of collection costs on both traffic and non traffic matters.
