Langley has reached agreement with Island County on the Langley Loop sign project.

The city council gave Mayor Paul Samuelson the authority on Monday to sign an agreement with the county over the financing plan for the signs marking the route.

The contract calls for Langley to pay $4,866 for the sign program, which will cost a total of $35,589.

City workers will install 16 Langley Loop signs around town, while the county will raise and maintain eight other loop signs; four on Bayview and Langley roads, and the other half on Highway 525.

The contract will go before Island County commissioners for approval.

City officials and the Langley chamber, at the urging of some merchants and other residents, have been working to improve signage to attract visitors to Whidbey Island off the highway and into the Village by the Sea for more than a year. The new Langley Loop route markers, as well as changes to other signs along Highway 525, including a large Langley display sign south of Ken’s Korner, are expected to entice travelers off the highway and into the Village by the Sea.
