The Langley City Council gave final approval Monday to its intent to annex the city into the Sno-Isle Library District.

The council voted unanimously to join the library district; the issue will go on the November ballot after it’s approved by Island County commissioners.

If the measure is approved by voters — a simple majority is needed — Langley property owners would pay the current property tax levy being assessed by the library district.

The current levy is 40 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value, so the owner of a $300,000 home would pay an additional $120 each year in property taxes.

Langley currently receives library service from Sno-Isle Libraries by contract– $44,117 this year. If the city annexes into the library district, it will no longer pay that amount, but will still be required to maintain the library building.

Of the communities in the two-county library district, all but Langley and Stanwood have annexed. Oak Harbor annexed in 1983, Coupeville in 1999.
