Police Chief Bob Herzberg will retire earlier than expected.

Langley’s longtime chief had said his last day would be March 2. Now, the city’s top cop is stepping down on Feb. 28.

Mayor Paul Samuelson has selected Officer Randy Heston to step in as acting police chief when Herzberg retires later this month, and the city council is expected to confirm Heston’s appointment at the council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

The appointment will be for six months, with the possibility of a six-month extension.

Heston has worked for the Langley Police Department since 1997, joining the force as a reserve officer and moving into the regular officer ranks seven years ago.

After the appointment is approved by the council, Heston’s first day as acting police chief would be March 1.

Also at tonight’s meeting, the council will review an ordinance that describe the duties and functions of the city’s police department, and a description of the duties and eligibility requirements for the police chief.

The council meets at 5:30 p.m. at city hall.
