Langley revenues are still down

The economy continues to hit Langley hard.

City revenues are down dramatically from 2009, and relief is nowhere on the horizon, City Treasurer Debbie Mahler told the Langley City Council this past week.

She said revenue from the hotel-motel tax, sales tax, building permits and real estate excise tax are all below last year’s levels for this time of year.

“They’re not following their normal patterns,” Mahler said Thursday. “They’re all down.”

She said the hotel-motel tax through July is running $4,500 below the same period in 2009. The drop is the first in recent memory, she said.

Last year, the hotel-motel tax generated $92,650, she said.

Mahler said sales taxes are running $21,000 below last year’s level through July. Last year, the sales tax provided $302,546 for the city’s general fund.

Mahler said the city’s general fund remains $33,000 in the black, but that includes $55,000 borrowed from other city funds earlier this year.

State law says the city must repay the interfund loan with interest.

“If we don’t go over budget on anything, we should stay on an even keel,” Mahler said. “We’re going to have to watch it really closely the rest of the year.”
