“While a large mysterious cat has been seen by several people in South Whidbey over the last month, Coupeville recently had a big feline spotting of its own.A 7-year-old girl reported seeing a cougar in the NE Parker Road area of Coupeville Wednesday night.But Coupeville Deputy Marshal Charles Curly Charleton said that deputies weren’t able to find any signs – like paw prints or scat – of a giant kitty-cat in the area where the girl said she saw it.While Charleton said deputies aren’t ruling out that there’s a cougar out there, they’ve also considered that it might have been a bobcat or even a dog. Yet he pointed out that the girl identified a picture of a cougar from an encyclopedia.Cougars aren’t native to Whidbey Island, but Charleton said he remembers that there was at least one living in North Whidbey in the 1970s. The big, elusive cats live in Skagit County and could somehow make it to the island. Coyotes, for example, are not native to the island but somehow migrated to Whidbey in the 1980s. There are also several people on the island who own cougars and other big cats as pets. At this point, Charleton said, the deputies are just waiting to see if there are any more report of abnormally large cats in the area.”
