Professor gives Sunday sermon

Dr. Ed Smyth makes a return visit to South Whidbey Community Church tomorrow morning, with a sermon entitled “Formed by the Potter,” based on Jeremiah 18.

Smyth is professor of educational ministry at Seattle Pacific University’s School of Theology. He is also the founder and president of The Master’s Men, a nonprofit ministry that takes him on speaking engagements throughout the U.S.

Preceding the morning worship will be a combined Adult Fellowship class at 9 a.m. where Part One of Lee Strobel’s DVD, “The Case for Faith” will be shown and discussed. The DVD deals with Christianity’s two most often-asked questions: “Why is Jesus the only way and other religions are not?” and “Why does God allow pain and injustice to exist in a world he created?”

SWCC offers a wide variety of gifted and educated speakers at Sunday morning worship services. Both the church and all its speakers adhere to the National Association of Evangelicals Statement of Faith.

Each worship service begins at 10 a.m., and is preceded at 9 a.m. by two adult learning forums: one a discussion of the Book of Romans, led by Stan Walker; the other a study of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, led by Jim Craft. Midweek Bible studies continue in the Gospel of Luke, at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, led by Art Angst at the home of Rick and Dinah Zapata.

South Whidbey Community Church is open to everyone and gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley.

‘Great Fullness’ at UUCWI church

As the holiday season gets underway, Rev Kit Ketcham will speak at the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island about how we might pause to count our blessings and consider how we might extend ourselves to bless others. She will discuss the “Great Fullness” and how it enriches our lives and the lives of those we encounter.

All are welcome. Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided. The service is at 10 a.m. Sunday at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.

Beverly Graham is speaker at Unity

Beverly Graham’s talk for Unity services on Sunday, Nov. 23 will address the fundamentals of giving thanks: gratitude, graciousness and grace. She will combine song and story in this Thanksgiving message.

The service will convene at 10 a.m. at Bayview Hall and everyone is welcome.

Please note that Unity Church is collecting much needed foodstuffs for Good Cheer. Donations will be particularly welcomed at this time.

God’s likeness is the topic at next service

Is it possible that God’s “likeness” is trapped in a mortal and imperfect body? On Sunday, Nov. 23, the Christian Science service discusses the subjects of “Soul and Body” and why you don’t have to wait to experience your life as God’s likeness.

“God fashions all things, after His own likeness.” (Genesis)

The service is 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Science church at

2411 E. Highway 525.
