Man accused in child porn case

Prosecutors charged Sean A. Gaffney, 32, with looking at, possessing and sending child pornography.

An Oak Harbor man is accused of looking at, possessing and sending child pornography, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Sean A. Gaffney, 32, in Island County Superior Court May 26 with viewing depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct in the first degree, possession of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct and sending or bringing into the state depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

If convicted of the charges against him, Gaffney could face up to six years and three months in prison under the standard sentencing range.

In 2018, a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security was investigating people who were sharing child porn through a file-sharing protocol and identified Gaffney as a suspect through an IP address.

The report on the investigation describes videos of girls as young as 4 years of age being sexually assaulted.

In March 2019, special agents served a search warrant at Gaffney’s home in Oak Harbor.

In an interview with investigators, Gaffney allegedly admitted to possessing child porn; he said he initially looked at it out of “morbid curiosity and that it spiraled out of control,” according to the report by a special agent.

A review of digital media seized from Gaffney identified more than 500 images and 93 video files containing “child sexual abuse material,” the report states.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children identified 1,895 child victims in the images and 32 child victims in the video files.
