A 25-year-old Oak Harbor man is facing charges in an Oct. 23 road rage incident on North Whidbey, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Robert C. Askew in Island County Superior Court Dec. 7 with malicious mischief in the first degree, reckless driving, hit and run, and two counts of reckless endangerment.

A report by a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office states that the incident began in Skagit County. A driver reported that another motorist, later identified as Askew, drove a Volkswagen at a high rate of speed, passing him just before the roundabout at Sharpes Corner, the deputy’s report states.

Askew then sped up the hill and passed another vehicle illegally, almost causing a head-on collision, the deputy’s report alleges.

The driver said Askew “brake checked” him several times so he tried to pass him on the shoulder. But as the vehicle passed, Askew turned his car and struck the other car, the report states. Askew drove away without stopping.

Askew later admitted to the deputy that he brake checked the other car; he said the other driver was flashing his lights and honking at him, the report states. Askew also allegedly admitted to hitting the other car, saying it “was probably not the best decision,” the deputy wrote.

The deputy noted that the passenger side of Askew’s car was heavily damaged while the other car’s fender was moderately damaged.

If convicted of the charges against him, Askew could face from 33 to 43 months in prison under the standard sentencing range. Askew is also facing theft-related charges in earlier cases in Island and Skagit counties.
