A Freeland man accused of stabbing his parents earlier this month will be arraigned on two counts of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon Monday in Island County Superior Court.

Authorities claim Sean Paul DeMerchant told deputies he cut his mother and father after he became upset with them “and things got out of control.” He was arrested in their Bush Point Terrace home shortly after the assault Oct. 9, when deputies found him in the same room as his wounded parents.

His mother and father were treated at area hospitals and later released.

DeMerchant, who is currently in the county jail in Coupeville on $500,000 bond, will face arraignment Oct. 24.

DeMerchant, 38, has had trouble with the law. He was prosecuted in 2008 for a “road rage” incident involving a bicyclist near Bayview, and pled guilty to fourth-degree assault.

The incident happened in May 2008 when DeMerchant was driving a Dodge SUV on Marshview Avenue near the Bayview Cash Store.

Police said DeMerchant yelled at a bicyclist to ride on the shoulder of the road, and when the woman responded, he stopped his Durango, got out and threw the woman to the ground. He then continued to stand over her and yell at her, and she called police with her cellphone.

Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks said DeMerchant received a suspended sentence of one year, based on the condition that he get anger management counseling and attend driver safety school. He served five days of his suspended sentence in connection with the assault.

If convicted of the new charges, DeMerchant could be in prison between 21 and 27 years.
