Man wielded knife, bear repellent

The suspect, 46-year-old Joseph B. Hawkins, appeared in court and the judge set his bail at $50,000.

A Langley man is accused of entering his ex-girlfriend’s home without permission and attacking her with a knife and “bear Mace” on Oct. 16, according to court documents.

The suspect, 46-year-old Joseph B. Hawkins, appeared in Island County Superior Court Oct. 18 and the judge set his bail at $50,000.

Prosecutors charged Hawkins Oct. 19 with burglary in the first degree, assault in the second degree and felony harassment. The burglary and assault charges are considered domestic-violence-related.

A deputy’s report on the case states that a man and a woman were at their Clinton home when Hawkins entered the house without permission. He is the woman’s ex-boyfriend and had been contacting her “nonstop,” the report states.

The woman said she opened the bedroom door to find Hawkins on the other side. He pushed her and tried to get into the room where the other man was, the report states.

The woman pushed Hawkins out of the bedroom and convinced him to go to the kitchen area. He asked the woman about her new boyfriend and, becoming angry, reached into his pocket and pulled out a knife and can of bear-repelling spray. He put the knife to his own throat and then to the woman’s throat, asking if he should kill her, according to court documents.

Hawkins then said he was going to “Mace” and gut the other man, but the woman blocked his way to prevent him from going to the bedroom, the report states. After a shoving match, the woman convinced Hawkins to stay in the kitchen and her boyfriend called the police.

If convicted of the crimes against him, Hawkins could face up to nine years and eight months in prison under the standard sentencing range.
