An Oak Harbor man is accused of robbing a luggage-toting stranger and trying to slash him with a knife Aug. 1, according to court records.

Police responded to a report of an assault on Northwest Crosby Avenue just before 10 p.m. A resident told police that he was walking to his parents’ home with a rolling suitcase, a green grocery bag and a backpack when he was accosted by a stranger.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Max Rollag, started following him, according to police reports. The man crossed the street a couple of times to get away, but Rollag continued the slow-motion pursuit.

Rollag told the man that he was going to get the man’s stuff whether he liked it or not. Rollag grabbed the suitcase and the man swung the green bag at him, the police report states.

The victim then saw that Rollag was holding a knife, and Rollag started slashing at him, according to the report. The man was not injured.

The man tried to flag down several passing cars to get help. Finally, a driver stopped and Rollag ended up running away.

A neighbor who saw the incident recognized Rollag and informed the police, the report indicates. Police later arrested Rollag.

Rollag appeared in Island County Superior Court Aug. 3 and the judge found probable cause existed to believe he committed the crimes of robbery in the first degree and assault in the second degree.

The judge set Rollag’s bail at $25,000.
