The City of Langley recognized the mentors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County during the city council meeting Monday.

Mayor Paul Samuelson issued a proclamation of Langley’s deepest appreciation for those individuals who dedicate themselves to serving as mentors and who make a difference in the lives of young South Whidbey residents.

“Mentors demonstrate that the strength of our community lies in the hearts and souls of our residents, and that a positive influence in someone’s life helps them secure a more hopeful future,” Samuelson read from the proclamation.

Samuelson called on the people of South Whidbey to recognize the importance of mentoring and to serve as mentors in their community.

Michaela Marx Wheatley, BBBS South Whidbey site director, accepted the honor on behalf of the South Whidbey volunteers who are currently matched. Island-wide, Big Brothers Big Sisters has served more than 200 children in the past year.

Oak Harbor also issued a proclamation in January, National Mentoring Month, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. The goal of the celebration is to focus attention on the need for mentors, as well as how individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits can work together to increase the number of mentors, and brighten the futures for young people. The Whidbey Island mayors followed the lead of President Obama, who signed a similarly worded proclamation in December.

Longtime executive director Peggy Dyer said, “Every individual contribution to children in our community now, helps to change our collective futures in a positive way. These efforts will pay huge benefits to all concerned.”
