A community meeting to answer questions regarding a proposed sewer system for Freeland will be this week.

The meeting, conducted by commissioners of the Freeland Water and Sewer District, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the gym at Trinity Lutheran Church, 18341 Highway 525 in Freeland.

The district proposes to form a local improvement district among the owners of the 471 parcels that would be included in the first phase of the project, estimated to cost nearly $40 million.

Several property owners say the cost to hook up to the sewer system would be too expensive without more support from state and federal funds.

They have vowed to gather letters of protest from property owners of more than 40 percent of the parcels, thus defeating the LID.

A public hearing on the proposed LID is scheduled for May 24, at which district commissioners are expected to vote to form it.
