Millennium Mile attracts crowd

Threatening skies and prospects of impending Y2K doom didn’t stop a hearty group of runners and joggers from participating in the New Year's Eve Millennium Mile and 5k Fun Run sponsored by South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District.

“Threatening skies and prospects of impending Y2K doom didn’t stop a hearty group of runners and joggers from participating in the New Year’s Eve Millennium Mile and 5k Fun Run sponsored by South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District.The event was held Dec. 31 at Community Park, just hours before the new millennium kicked in. And while Y2K may have been a disappointment, the race participants achieved their primary goal of having a good time.Overall winner of the event was Peter Oakley who toured the woodsy course in 20 minutes and 40 seconds. Oakley has dominated the local race scene this year. Last summer, he was the first islander to cross the finish line in the Whidbey Island Triathlon.Among women runners, here are the finishers: Jessie Enell, 23:26; Carla Jolley, 27:21; Marguerite Haugberg, 27:36; Mary Stewart, 28:57; Cheri Cramer, 19:10; Sheila McCue 29:11; Anna Schmidtt, 31:20; Barb Schultz, 31:49; Chris Schrecengost, 31:52; Carol Gannaway, 36:08.Following Oakley in the men’s race were Curt Gordon, 21:21; Gilman Low, 21:49; Boyd Hart, 22:01; Matt Johnson, 23:30; Glenn Jones, 24:59; Mark Jackson, 28:06; Tom Puentes, 20:07; Ross Godwin, 30:04; Don Schmitt, 31:20; Gary Villella, 32:36; John Holbron, 39:10; John Shelton, 39:11.There was also a division for walkers. Jonah Jolley finished in 11:15; Glenn Jolley, 11:22; Ethan Buktenica 15:53; Joy Thompson 15:55, Debbie Barrow, 16:08; Emily Thompson, 17:55.20; Janine Boyers 17:55.25; and Julie Buktenica, 23:42. Finishing an inspirational last was Carl Westling who was accompanied by his wife Pat.”
