A Clinton woman was transported to the hospital for injuries she suffered in a one-car accident on Deer Lake Road this past Wednesday.

According to Sgt. Laura Price of the Island County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at about 5:45 a.m. near the turn at Big Harv’s Lane. Jacqueline Edwards, 29, was westbound on Deer Lake Road in a 2011 Ford Escape when the vehicle left the roadway.

“It looks like she failed to negotiate the turn,” Price said.

The car entered a ditch along the side of the road and struck a culvert, mailboxes and an embankment before rolling over and striking a fence.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage to both sides of the car, which made her extrication by emergency responders challenging, said Mike Cotton, deputy chief with South Whidbey Fire/EMS.

“We had to remove the door to get her out,” Cotton said.

It was taken off with hydraulic tools, commonly referred to as the “Jaws of Life.”

Edwards was then transported by ambulance to Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville. Her status could not be confirmed with hospital officials by press time.

Police ruled out drugs or alcohol as factors in the accident. Edwards was cited for “speed too fast to avoid a collision.”

The accident resulted in one lane of traffic being shut down for about 30 minutes.
