Missing Oak Harbor man found dead in Clinton ravine

Island police are looking into the death of an Oak Harbor man on South Whidbey last week.

Anthony J Speed, 51, was found dead at about 10:45 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in a ravine near Dalton Realty on Highway 525 in Clinton, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Office. As of Friday at press time, the official cause of death was undetermined.

“At this point in the investigation there is no suspicion of foul play; cause of death is under investigation,” Sheriff Mark Brown said.

Speed’s was one of two bodies discovered late last week on South Whidbey. Another man was found hanging from a tree at the entrance of Saratoga Woods Friday morning. Early reports were that both were suicides, and the South Whidbey Record has a general policy of not reporting on self-inflicted deaths for ethical reasons.

The sheriff’s office has since confirmed, however, that Speed’s death may not have been a suicide. Island County Coroner Robert Bishop said, “an exact cause and manner of death is pending toxicology.”

Speed was reported missing by his girlfriend in September. According to an Oak Harbor news release, the man “checked himself out of a Snohomish County Hospital against medical advice for some medical issues” and was seen shortly before midnight, Sept. 18, at the Clinton Ferry Terminal. A sheriff’s deputy spotted Speed walking up the highway about an hour later, where the man reportedly declined a ride, telling the officer he lived in the area.

“Mr. Speed at that time said he was OK and didn’t need any further assistance,” Brown said.

That was the last time Speed was seen alive, the sheriff added.
