Traffic was backed up on Highway 525 at Useless Bay Avenue Monday morning following a rear-end collision.

Three people were involved in the accident, but nobody was injured. The two Honda CRVs involved sustained heavy damage; as South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Jason Laughren put it, “I would say they’re both getting new vehicles.”

Laughren said the wreck occurred when one of the SUVs going northbound ran out of gas and pulled over on the highway shoulder near the intersection with Useless Bay Avenue. The second SUV then collided with the motionless vehicle, going an estimated 45 miles per hour. Laughren couldn’t say why the collision occurred.

The Highway 525 northbound lane was closed for roughly 30 minutes, but traffic officers were able to continue the flow of traffic using the turn lane towards Useless Bay Avenue. There were minor backups.
